What Are the Benefits of Using Bathing Salts?

Salt baths have been used for thousands of years dating as far back as 460 BC. For centuries, experts have used salt baths for medicinal purposes. Today, we still use salt baths for many different reasons to take advantage of the many benefits they provide.

Here, at Mud Day Spa, we offer three different bath salt options: Himalayan salt, Epsom salt and magnesium chloride flakes. We will discuss these each in further depth next.

Himalayan Salt Baths

Human bodies require a numerous amount of essential minerals, vitamins and other nutrients to maintain optimal health for the body’s complex processes. Most of us don’t get all of these nutrients through our diet and must look to other sources to obtain them.

Himalayan salt is one wonderful way to gain some of these nutrients back as Himalayan salt contains 84 of these essential minerals and other trace elements, including calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, zinc, selenium and more.  Bathing in Himalayan salt allows the body to absorb the minerals while at the same time releases harmful toxins. Who doesn’t love being able to accomplish two things at once?

Another benefit of a Himalayan salt bath is the effect it has on your skin. It is naturally hydrating, balances pH and promotes cellular regeneration. If you are suffering from eczema, psoriasis, or other skin conditions, it is very helpful and calming.

A warm Himalayan salt bath is relaxing and stress relieving, as well as aiding in relieving aches and pains. Himalayan salt is also great for helping to heal wounds, blisters and acne due to it being sterile. Finally, after all these other great benefits, Himalayan salt baths also promote great sleep.

To get the most out of your baths, you need to use 1.28 ounces of Himalayan salt to 1 gallon of water. You should soak for 20-30 minutes and then rest for 30 minutes after your bath.

Magnesium Chloride Flake Baths

We don’t typically pay nearly enough attention to the specific minerals that our body needs. All of them are important for various reasons, however, magnesium definitely is at the top of the list as it is involved in many areas of our body’s processes.

For example, it is vital for our heart health, insulin production of our pancreas, stimulation of oxygen production, and stimulating our body’s chemical energy source.

Unfortunately, most of us do not get the magnesium we all need through our food sources, leaving most of us deficient, likely up to 90%. Magnesium Chloride Flake baths are the most effective way to make up that deficit.

When used regularly, you can take advantage of the many benefits Magnesium Chloride Flakes offer. For example, they can help relieve pain and soreness, particularly post-workout aches and pains. They can work as a stress reliever and help to ease headaches and promote better sleep.

Your cells natural process is to get rid of harmful toxins and absorb nutrients, and warm salt baths take advantage of this naturally occurring process. Magnesium Chloride Flakes also assist insulin production and usage to help prevent and improve the severity of diabetes. As well as all of these other amazing benefits, Magnesium Chloride Flakes are very helpful in improving heart health, specifically with regard to blood pressure, addressing heart arrhythmia, and preventing major issues like heart attacks and strokes.

To use Magnesium Chloride Flakes, you need to dissolve at least 2 cups of flakes in your warm bath. Soak for at least 20 to 30 minutes to allow enough time for absorption of magnesium. You should aim for 2 to 3 baths per week to really gain the benefits of the magnesium.

If you don’t have time for a full bath and have achy feet, you can make yourself a nice foot bath with a half cup of Magnesium Chloride Flakes.

Epsom Salt Baths

One other type of bath salts offered are Epsom salts. You’ve likely heard of Epsom salts, but are you aware of all of the health benefits you can gain from using them?

We’ve previously discussed the importance of magnesium in our body’s natural processes. Epsom salts contain magnesium and sulphates. Sulphates help with the production of brain tissue, proteins throughout our bodies, and enzymes. Many proteins and enzymes are necessary for detoxification processes.

Like with Himalayan salt and Magnesium Chloride Flakes, Epsom salt baths are a great way to absorb these essential nutrients through the skin and into the body, which is the most efficient way to absorb nutrients.

Epsom salt baths offer numerous health benefits by supporting joint proteins, drawing out harmful toxins from your body, and easing muscle pain. Epsom salts help to replenish magnesium, which is a natural stress reliever as it elevates serotonin.

Epsom salt also acts as an anti-inflammatory which can provide relief of various ailments such as swelling and bruising, sunburns and insect bites. Epsom salt is a great natural remedy for foot problems, such as toenail fungus, gout, athlete’s foot and ingrown toenails.

For an Epsom salt bath, you should soak for 20-30 minutes, or even longer, in at least 2 cups of dissolved Epsom salts in warm water.

Salt Bath Tips

For any of these salt baths, here are a few tips:

  • Always soak for at least 20 to 30 minutes. If you can soak longer, that’s great! You will be able to absorb more of the beneficial minerals the longer you can stay in the bath.
  • If possible, don’t rinse off the salts after your bath. Your skin will continue to absorb the minerals afterward. However, if you have very sensitive skin, you may need to rinse off the salt.
  • Aim for 2 to 3 salt baths per week.
  • Feel free to add an essential oil to your bath. 6 to 12 drops should do.
  • Try combining bath salts to reap even more rewards!
  • And as always, consult your doctor if you are pregnant or have any health concerns.
